As new research reveals homeschooling struggles, our educational book sets can help

Several months after schools closed and many parents switched to homeschooling their children, we can get a detailed insight into how parents have fared with the change. Unfortunately, it isn’t an entirely pretty picture, with many parents reportedly having run into significant stress. 

Ulster University’s Unesco Education Centre suggests that from its own research, many parents found homeschooling “stressful and challenging” as the pandemic raged. However, other research gives reason to think that educational book sets like ours may help to ease homeschooling difficulties.

Online resources are not always convenient – or available

In a report titled “Experiences of supporting children’s home learning during COVID-19”, Ulster University reported some parents struggling to navigate the huge range of online resources, including apps and online activities, available for homeschooling use.  

The report added: “Often, there were insufficient devices in the home, particularly if the household had more than one child and/or parents needed a laptop to complete their own work.”

Unfortunately, it’s not always a given that families have strong Internet access; indeed, another of the research’s findings was that parents entitled to free school meals were likelier than other parents to have poor Internet access, if any at all.

When English can feel like a foreign language
