They now share some celebrety status, for this weeks, 28.7.07, TES magazine, p14-16, features photos including them doing some educational work. Also are some squawking parrots that I ordered some time later. Of all the courses I have attended, I don't think any has changed my work so much. I invented my own use of the birds, for mental oral maths, in part the picture lead to prominence in an article about supply teaching. I am working as a nurse, mainly dealing with people who have respiratory problems. In one of my jobs I have to go into schools to talk about asthma and how it is treated. I came up with the idea of writing stories about a big bad wolf who loses his puff, and found the most marvellous puppet on your website. Since then Wilbur the Wolf has appeared in front of about 1000 children. He has been a great asset in gaining children's attention, and is the perfect size to use an aerochamber spacer and inhaler! I also work as a practice nurse, and Wilbur is unbelievably popular with the children who come to see me in asthma clinic. He helps me to show even the most reluctant toddlers how to take their inhalers, and even uses the computer. He was filmed recently as part of a promotional video for the NHS computer system (although we don't know yet if the footage is being used) because the camera crew were fascinated by him. I have also used Wilbur to deliver a talk on healthy eating - the children had to come up with ideas of things that he could eat other than the pigs that he had in his 'lunch' bag. So all in all Wilbur has been an amazing success - and was incredibly competitively priced compared with most large puppets. Thanks so much for providing me with my partner! For Early Years (Problem Solving Reasoning & Numeracy) I’ve created a simple ‘vowel sounds number game’. I used six insects to represent the number 6! Brilliant to find you have 6 mini beasts hiding in Mr Rabbit’s lettuce house. Amazing link! So much to talk about; for the children to explore / discover and ‘spot which are the same / different’. The possibilities across so many areas of learning are huge Can’t wait to use them straight away Also, I’m really looking forward to the children having the opportunity to choose whether to use the small finger puppet crocodile or the more realistic long arm glove puppet when catching the little monkeys (finger puppet chimps). Introducing the finger puppet, the same size as the monkeys will be a good starting point. One child in a school (where I was leading a pilot project for Early Years Music) who had previously made no attempt to join in (& always looked so sad) responded in an incredible way when he held one of the monkeys. He helped him move with a feel of the pulse of the tune, kept his monkey til the very last & went on to sing on his own ‘Hey, Mr Crocodile you can’t catch me’. AND chose the option to sing at the end: ‘He missed me, he missed me!’ with the biggest ever smile His teacher was thrilled. The puppet made all the difference to that little boy Thanks again. It is possible to engage the youngest of children with peep-bo type games using "The Bear in a Honey Pot", "Mice in a Box" and the range of pop-up puppets on sticks. The use of simple repetitive language is vital in supporting the development of listening and language skills in young hearing impaired children and having, at my fingertips, a range of colouful, attractive resources makes it possible to use the same kind of language with different puppets - this makes it much easier to keep the young child engaged and focused. I wanted to share with you a recent series of home visits to a pre-school old profoundly deaf child who has a cochlear implant (I visit the child weekly). Sign language, alongside speech, is being used to support the development of this child's communication skills. Over the past three weeks I have had some of the best sessions ever with X who has, recently, become interested in imaginative play. I took along one of your large, signing puppets. (We called him Bobby, because the lip-patterns for that name are easily lip-read). Over the past few weeks, Bobby has been in an imaginary car, on a boat, to the seaside and for a picnic. He has had his clothes changed into the child's swimming trunks and has gone swimming. He has sat in a high chair and had lunch and has gone upstairs to bed and has been told a story by the child (signs + odd words). All of this has been photographed and we have made a book that documents the adventures of Bobby and X. These sessions have been great fun and have not only kept X fully engaged but have provided and excellent way of promoting good listening, language and attention. The first question X asks when I arrive is, "Where's Bobby?" Thank you, too for all the support and advice you have given, over the years, on how to make the best use of your wonderful puppets. I didn't know how I could use it at school - I teach 8-9 year olds and I thought the puppets were mainly for younger children. 'Abdul' is a firm favourite in Assembly and Circle Time; in fact the children keep asking if he can come to Geography lessons, too, as we're studying deserts as part of a topic on Climate. I didn't know how I could use it at school - I teach 8-9 year olds and I thought the puppets were mainly for younger children. However, I introduced 'Mac' to my maths group and we used him for tables practice and mental arithmetic. The children loved him and he really livened up our lessons. Next I bought the hedgehog with a beautifully expressive face and used him in our 'Circle Time' to discuss socail issues. Such a success that I splashed out on a biblical camel. 'Abdul' is a firm favourite in Assembly and Circle Time; in fact the children keep asking if he can come to Geography lessons, too, as we're studying deserts as part of a topic on Climate. What I wasn't prepared for was the children's desire to have puppets too. I had a box of simple hand puppets in the class for wet breaks, but they had not been touched since last September. Not only did they suddenly become a magnet to the children in every spare moment, but your website is so easy to remember that most of them have been looking you up on the internet at home. I was amazed to discover each day a new addition to the form - all birds, so you can imagine the noise! I trust you've noticed the sudden interest in puppets in Buckinghamshire! As a retired teacher I have been using a home made puppet for many years but he 'died' an awful death at the mouths of mice in the loft. I bought the chimp to take with me to inland Guyana to work amongst some of the poorer communities living in the Rupanunni valley which is on the savannah bordering typical rainforest. According to our standards they have very little and the education on offer falls way behind western standards (no reflection of the dedication of poorly paid teachers) As part of the work myself and the team have been doing has been to support the teachers and encourage new ways of communicating, to work amongst adults and village leaders in quest to produce cash crops as well as manage the ecostructure of the area. Mike HammonThe monkey puppet immediately became a huge hit, initially with the children at the school and then as the news got round people flocked to the yet unfinished church to hear more from the puppet, named Mr Monkeynuts (as we are encouraging peanut growing in the area) My ventriloquism leaves a lot to be desired but we found that the Amerindians who are usually quite an expressionless lot responded amazingly to the puppet. Many walked miles through the dark to came and meet Monkeynuts. I have even been asked to revisit in the future and run training sessions for the area's teachers. An invite I shall consider carefully as the living conditions there are a little primitive. Anyway thanks again for your advice on using the puppet and no doubt you shall hear from me again when I consider a partner for him on our next trip to the interior of Guyana.
